OUR HISTORY

        P. Ravensbergen & Sons Ltd. traces it’s origin to 1956 when Pieter Ravensbergen, an immigrant from Rijnsburg the Netherlands , purchased eight acres of land just a few miles west of Smithville Ontario .
Rijnsburg was, and is, a flower-producing district in Holland and Pieter cultivated tulips there before deciding to immigrate to Canada with his wife and 7 children in 1951. The family first lived in Fenwick, then in and around Smithville for 5 years until they settled down in their present location. In Canada , he started forcing tulip bulbs in pint sized raspberry containers behind his wood stove in his home while working at any job that would keep the family fed.
With pick-axe and shovel, footings were dug out for a 20 x 27 ft. barn used for heating and storage for a 20 x 50 ft. greenhouse. The greenhouse sat without glass for a year because the bank would not give the $250 loan required for the project. The following year, ½ of the greenhouse was used, heated by a coal stove. At the same time, tulips were still being planted in the field, covering over 3 acres. In 1959, Peter quit his job working at National Steel Car in Hamilton to attend to the business full time. In1968 the entire tulip crop was hit by a mould problem, which put an end to the tulips. Peter’s four sons, Gerry, Rolie, Peter and Jacob, began growing potted Chrysanthemums. Growth continued from this point on and today P. Ravensbergen & Sons Ltd. comprises of 5 acres of greenhouses, plus 2 acres of outdoor production. The wholesale division distributes cut-flowers and potted plants both in Canada and the U.S.A.

One of the four sons, Jake is still actively involved in the business, as well as some of Pieter’s grandchildren. One son Peter Jr. passed away in 1986. Peter Sr. himself passed away in 2000, while Rolie retired in January 2001. Gerrit (Gerry) has since relinquished his role in the governance of the company but continues to enjoy an active life doing the work he loves. The company continues to grow quality flowering potted plants using the principles with which Pieter Ravensbergen founded the company.
